About
Trinity United, Botwood,
A Congregation of the United Church of Canada.
The service is led by the churches pastor, James Martin-Carter. James also leads the musical worship of our church and the worship team. The worship team consists of James on the keyboard, Bassist Arthur Sceviour - and we hope to have other musicians and singers to join the team. Before the service begins there is often chorus and short song singing to get everyone primed for the worship experience at Trinity. In addition to musicians and singers, the worship team consists of Liturgists- people who lead the service. A member or friend of the church reads the scripture and other readings as directed by the pastor.
The name of the service changes weekly depending on the theme we are developing for that week.
On a typical Sunday morning we have plenty of room for more people. We currently see between 40-60 people, but we are experiencing growth!
From the moment you walk in the doors you will be greeted warmly and cordially offered complementary coffee and be engaged in conversation. You will also be handed an order of service and musical resources on the way in. During worship there is another time of greeting - giving others a chance to get to know you.
Once in the sanctuary, there will be chatter. Then, about five minutes prior to the service, we will do some singing.
Normally a singing bowl is sounded three time recognizing our Trinitarian heritage and that the time of worship is about to begin - calling people to center themselves and prepare for worship, followed by the lighting of the Christ Candle.
Normally we use “Voices United” and “More Voices” as they are the official worship books of our church. Occasionally there will be hymns taken from “A New Century Hymnal” of the United Church of Christ, a church which is in Full Communion with the United Church of Canada.
Hymns are accompanied by piano, and sometimes other percussion instruments.
Though most often our worship style is not charismatic, but relaxed and quite intentionally not what might be described as “Happy Clappy,” we strive for worship that is dignifed, experiential, meaningful and relaxed. We love good quality music. Our music is a strategic blend of traditional and contemporary and revolves around the theme which Pastor James is developing for the day.
Exactly how long is the sermon?
Normally 7-10 mins, but it varies. Worship typically lasts for 1 hour but can also vary.
We offer a hybrid worship of in person and through Facebook Live.

Trinity United's building is a beautiful example of what might be called “New England Church Architecture." It is an historical building which has been in existence since 1926, and went through a major restoration in the 1950s as it currently stands. The church is home to some of the most beautiful, and bountiful stained glass windows in central Newfoundland and perhaps in the province. The building seats approximately 350 people in wooden pews, and is completely wheelchair accessible to all 3 levels.
The church is the heart of an historic neighbourhood in Botwood, just steps away from what was once an active airbase in the 1st and 2nd world wars and is now the towns major tourist attraction - Heritage Park.

The congregation began as a Methodist mission in the 19th century and joined the United Church of Canada in 1925.
